Because the St George Scuba Club relies entirely on private members’ boats around Sydney, etiquette focuses on teamwork, small-footprint gear management, and mutual respect. Since members volunteer their time and vessels, being a helpful and prepared buddy is the ultimate priority.
Gear Management & Setup
- Small footprint: Keep your dry bags and extra gear stowed under the bench or in the cabin. Avoid cluttering the deck.
- Prep before boarding: Assemble your BCD and regulator, test your air, and secure your weight pockets before the boat leaves the dock.
- Keep wet and dry separate: Do not bring dripping wetsuits or mesh bags into dry cabin areas.
Onboard Conduct
- Lend a hand: Assist the skipper and crew with launching, retrieving, anchoring and washing down the boat. Everyone pitches in.
- Be punctual: Arrive early so the boat can depart on time. Stowing gear quickly is essential.
- Watch your step: Never walk around the deck with your fins on. Put them on at the dive platform or entry point.
Diving & Water Etiquette
- Know your buddy: Confirm your dive plan, hand signals, and depth limits on the boat
- Wait your turn: Don’t crowd the dive platform or transom until the diver in front of you has entered the water and given the clear signal.
- Mind your bubbles: Avoid lingering on the surface once you roll in. Descend efficiently so you don’t drift away from the boat or your group.
Post-Dive Protocol
- Clear the ladder: When returning to the boat, hand heavy items like weights and fins up to the crew if offered, and quickly exit the water to make room for the next diver.
- Respect the marine toilet: Boat marine heads are notoriously sensitive. Ask the skipper how to operate the valves before using it.
- Pack your own bag: Have your dive gear packed away and secured before the boat docks back at the ramp.
